Movie Mondays!

This is the next to last of fourteen specials (performances) Carlin recorded to ultimately be aired on HBO and truthfully it is not his best. Carlin was one of the most talented and intelligent comics of his generation and his humor was biting and hilarious letting none of society’s trappings escape his cutting wit. He spent a lifetime pointing out the irony of the human condition and throwing “stones” at the world around him but here, there is less humor and more the anger mixed with the bitterness of a man who has tired of the battle. Aside from the opening 15 minutes where Carlin shows his amazing prowess with language, juxtaposing hackneyed phrases in an almost sing song mantra of self definition, the performance descends into a darker territory from which it fails to emerge. If you’ve never seen any of Carlin’s work, don’t start here - seek out his earlier performances. If you’re a longtime Carlin fan, you’ll see a great talent nearing the end.
